How to have a Simple Stylish and Colorful Bedroom
Bedrooms are the most personal space in a home. They're where you sleep, laugh, and dream. So I believe that they should be cozy, inviting and refreshing.
This is why I've compiled a list of tips, advice, and practical recommendations on you can transform your bedroom into a place that you can't wait to retire to....
Why Balanced Colorful Bedrooms are Best
I have an overall philosophy when it comes to decorating a room. I believe that rooms should have a balance of neutrals, colors and texture. This way the room isn't too overbearing with colors or bland from too many neutrals.
Let's get started....
Why a Rug Can Make you Smile in the Morning
When you get out of bed in the morning there's nothing better than when your toes are greeted by something soft and inviting. In my opinion bedrooms need rugs whether it be wall-to-wall carpeting or a nice plush throw rug....and I know it's a bit of a throw back to the 70s but I do love the feel of a nice shag carpet on my feet. Their long fibers and wooly-look also bring a lot of texture and personality to the room.
If you don't like shag, I also recommend a soft jut rug. Pottery Barn sells some very high quality soft ones and you can touch them in the show room to see if you like the texture.
How your Wall Color can Make you Happy
One of the most important aspects of any bedroom is wall color. Wall colors set the tone and feel of a room and I believe that none is as important than the one in your bedroom ...because its the first color that you see before you go to bed and the first one when you wake up. It should be something that soothes your soul and brings you joy. For me that color is blue. What is it for you?
Before buying your wall paint, go to your local hardware store and get paint samples and take them back to your house (they'll even let you buy little sample paint cans). Then see how you like the color in the light of that room at different parts of the day. And once you start painting remember that colors dry lighter than what first appears so don't worry if you don't like it initially...give it a day and then decide.
How Curtains can Make you Sleep Better
Curtains in a bedroom are of upmost importance. Studies have shown that people sleep better in almost complete darkness so in my opinion its important to have curtains that not only cheer up the room with their beauty, but that also block out street lights and moonlight. For example, in my old house I had a wonderful bedroom attic-style bedroom with windows on all sides, which I lived, ...but the first few weeks I was there I had a really hard time falling asleep. However, once I installed blackout curtains behind my bed, I slept like a baby.
If you've chosen a pastel or soft color for your bedroom walls room I recommend white or neutral curtains. However for neutral wall colors I recommend something more colorful...go bold!
Why your Bed should be Luxurious
Now on to THE most important part of any bedroom...the bed. I personally think that beds should be just downright luxurious....after all we spend a third of our lives in our beds.
I'm a big fan of the trend for cloth headboards. Not only does it look luxurious but if you move in your sleep like I do it's a much nicer surface to bump your head up against than wood or metal. One of the other great things about these plush headboards is that they're relatively inexpensive so you can change it out if you want to switch up your style or the colors in your room.
Now, I'm not going to talk much about mattresses even though they are one of most favorite things in the world...and that is because mattress choice is just too darn personal. It's something that you have to do in person. So for mattresses I recommend putting on some comfortable clothes and heading down to your local mattress shop or department store...and spend some quality time laying on a variety of mattresses ...and see what you like.
In my opinion, the most important thing about sheets is that they're soft..this is usually due to a high thread count so I recommend 800 count and up...believe me it's money well spent. Many of the well known stores make beautiful sheets and duvets, yet surprisingly they're usually in the 300-400 count range. So instead I buy my sheets from overstock. Not only are the sheets discounted but they're high quality and there's a good deal of variety. They also have a wonderful selection of goose down comforters and pillows.
Duvets and Pillows
Duvet covers and pillows are like the frosting on a cake. They make your bed pretty and inviting and if chosen correctly make you smile when you walk into the room. The most beautiful and elegant duvets and pillow sets I've found come from Macy's. They have a wide selection of great brands like the Hotel Collection and Calvin Klein. When picking out your duvet cover, blankets, and pillows I recommend really considering what you want to go to bed to every evening and wake up to every morning. Do solids like you feel calmer? Do you want to see something cheerful and colorful? Or do you prefer calm soothing tones and patterns?
Why Stylish and Colorful Furniture are Essential
Like your duvet cover, your bed side table is one of the first things you see in the morning so it should be something that makes you feel wonderful. It should also be practical. It is where you set your alarm clock, personal items and a sturdy lamp. It should have a wide surface and in my opinion drawers. At the moment I'm a big fan of mirrored bed side tables like the one to the left. Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have a nice selection, but if you're looking for something more affordable you can find some nice mirrored (or wooden) side tables at Home Goods or surprisingly Amazon.
I think that every bedroom (if it's big enough) should have somewhere to sit. Chairs in a bedroom are great when you need some privacy and want to curl up with a good book (and your living room is full of relatives). They're also really great for sitting your folded (or unfolded) laundry.
Aesthetically, they also bring a softness and coziness to a bedroom especially if you choose upholstered furniture with soothing pastel colors (which is my personal favorite for a bedroom).
Why Lighting can help you to Reenergize
Even if you have overhead lighting in your bedroom, I think it's important to incorporate table lamps. Overhead lights are useful when you're wide awake and doing practical things like making the bed or getting dressed, but unless you have a dimmer switch they are bright and not conducive to winding down. ...So I recommend getting a few table lamps and only using these when entering your bedroom to prepare for bed.
Aesthetically, make sure to find table lamps that add character to your bedroom. Boring table lamps are just depressing. For fun beautiful lamps check out Neiman Marcus. They have the best lamp collection out there and believe me I've done my research. I've also seen some really fun good quality colorful lamps at TJ Maxx. I recommend lamps with color...go bold. Make a statement. Let your table lamps be a work of art in their own right.
How to Make your Bedroom Colorful and Calming
Like I've repeatedly said in this post, your bedroom should be filled with things that you love and the artwork you choose for it should be no different. Before you dive into artwork shopping thinking about one thing: How do you want to feel before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning? ...If you're anything like me you want to feel cheerful and calm. To accomplish this I recommend artwork that is blue and/or yellow.
If you're looking for original artwork, I recommend a couple of things:
1) If you have one, visit your local arts district and see if you like anything (make a day of it)
2) Browse through Saatchi Art's online store. It has a thousands of works by emerging and established artists all over the world
3) If a friend has artwork in their home that you love, ask them where they go it and ask them for advice
4) google - a lot of artists are online now. Google the type of art you'd like and see what comes up.
5) Check out my pinterest board. I have a curated collection of contemporary sculptures and prints that might suit your taste.

Prints and Reproductions
If your budget is limited I recommend investing in canvas prints for your walls. They are prints of paintings or photographs embedded on canvas so they have a finer quality to them than a normal print. If you like abstracts, check out my abstract canvas artwork collection. Other options include Fine Art America which has canvas print art from independent artists all over the world. I also have a curated selection of prints on my pinterest board that might be helpful.
For affordable sculpture and accent pieces, I recommend visiting your local arts district or arts center (if you have one). Sometimes there are some surprisingly affordable finds. You can also find some great things at flea markets.
